How well I remember as a boy my first visits to Rodney Parade to watch Newport RFC play. Newport lost both their first matches of the season in 1957/8 but something made me want to keep coming back. Perhaps I was in awe of watching great players such as Malcolm Thomas, Bryn Meredith, Ken Jones, Roy Burnett etc but whatever it was I was hooked from an early age.

I have followed and supported Newport for nearly 47yrs and my wife has done so for over 40yrs and it has always been a very important part of our life even though we have not lived in Newport for many years. Just as you want your family to succeed in life then so we want Newport RFC to be successful. When Newport lose we feel as disappointed for the players and the club as we are for ourselves. Newport RFC has given us both tremendous pleasure and enjoyment over the years.

First match : Sept 7th 1957 Newport vs Penarth – and Newport lost 9-12 and have never lost to Penarth since !

My age : Slightly younger than my hero David Watkins.

My favourite player : David Watkins – who else !

Most memorable matches :

Newport 11 Australia 0 at Rodney Parade, Nov 23rd 1957.
Cardiff 15 Newport 16 in Welsh Cup Final, Apr 30th 1977.

Anyone who seeks to help or support Newport RFC has my full support and I wish the Trust every success.
