Former Players back FoNR
The Friends of Newport Rugby were delighted to receive the support of the Newport RFC Former Players Association this week in recognition of the efforts to preserve the future of Newport RFC and keep rugby at Rodney Parade. FPA secretary and recent Hall of Fame inductee Dennis Perrott wrote to FoNR and amongst other things stated the following: "The Black and Ambers Former Players Association are concerned about the future of rugby at Newport and of its home, Rodney Parade. Newport RFC and Rodney Parade are an asset to the city of Newport and are held in high esteem in all corners of the rugby playing world." "Associations such as Friends of Newport Rugby are doing sterling work in assuring the great history and the future of rugby in Newport and at Rodney Parade are maintained and safeguarded. We as former players solidly support their efforts." "Rodney Parade is a jewel in the crown of the city of Newport and although in need of modernising it should not be placed in the hands of developers. Over 140 years of history would be lost. The great rugby nations of New Zealand, South Africa and Australia, as well as countless other countries have all graced Rodney Parade and each have fond memories of the wonderful experiences they had playing at the ground." "We wish to express our grateful thanks and appreciation of the considerable contributions made by Martyn Hazell and Tony Brown in order to keep rugby at Rodney Parade." "We are sure that all former black and ambers and the friends of Newport rugby would feel desperately sad if the history and the future of this home of Newport rugby was to end now." Kev Jarvis |
