All change at FoNR
The recent FoNR AGM saw a number of changes to the committee make up with some familiar faces leaving us and some new keen volunteers stepping in. Godfrey Lee has stepped down from the History Officers role. Godfrey has been with the Trust for very many years and has been the driving force behind the wonderful historyofnewport.co.uk website. Travelling back and fore to just about every Newport and Dragons game from his home in Mid Wales probably makes Godfrey one of our most loyal and travelled supporters and we thank him very much for his huge input to FoNR’s success over the years. Joe Crocker, who will be familiar to just about all of you, is also standing down. Joe has a young family and also plays a very important role as team manager of the Newport Schools Rugby team. He has been an inspiration to the Trust in recent years with his enthusiasm, skills and effort and we will miss him incredibly. Joe was the one who came up with the idea of the ‘Hall of Fame’ dinners which have turned out to be extremely significant annual events for both the club and the Trust. Coming the other way are a father and son combination. John Barrett has been working alongside the FoNR committee for the best part of a year on historical projects and also lottery funding. John will pick up responsibility for all of the history officer role as well as continuing with his specific projects, more of which will be announced in due course. John’s son Owen is a school teacher at St Julian’s Comprehensive here in Newport and joins the Trust as schools liaison officer. Owen has been tasked with promoting Newport RFC around the schools of Newport to increase awareness of the ‘U20’s go free’ initiative and hence introduce more youngsters to the club. Also joining us is Rhys Jones. Rhys has followed Newport for very many years with his father Russ and almost never misses a match. Rhys is picking up all media responsibilities for FoNR and has also taken on running the official Newport RFC Twitter account. Please give all of these guys your thanks and support as without keen volunteers such as this we wouldn’t have a Trust and our club would be a very different place. Kev Jarvis |
