Brian Jones - FoNR Honorary Vice Patron
At the recent Newport RFC Hall of Fame dinner, Brian ‘BJ’ Jones was made an Honorary Vice Patron of The Friends of Newport Rugby Trust, joining Newport and Canadian legend Rod Snow in representing the organisation in this way along with Honorary Patron Brian Price. Brian’s involvement with Newport RFC stretches back to 1953 when he first played as an 18 year old. Remarkably in only his sixth game for the club he played against the New Zealand All Blacks in January 1954. In an illustrious career with the club he played 330 games scoring 101 tries as well as a large number of penalties, conversions and drop goals. He was also a regular player for Monmouthshire, Crawshays and The Barbarians. Not only did Brian play for Newport but he was also captain, coach and chairman in a 60+ year association with The Black & Ambers that continues to this day. Capped by Wales twice in 1960. He holds the distinction of being only the second Welsh player to have beaten all three of the big southern hemisphere international teams. A feat he achieved as a club player with Newport in 1957 against Australia, 1963 against New Zealand and for the Barbarians against South Africa in 1961. Quite remarkable. In recent years BJ has been extremely supportive of the work that FoNR do to support the club through volunteer effort and fundraising and we were all delighted when he accepted this position when receiving a certificate from membership secretary John Evans.
